Students from Gdansk University have organized a bicycle expedition to Peru, which they first named the Machu Picchu Cycle Expedition. This was to be a touristic expedition to explore Arequipa & Colca Canyon, Puno & Lake Titicaca, Cuzco and Machu Picchu. With their search of sponsors they contacted Jurek Majcherczyk. As they have written themselves - "...it was he who offered to help us prepare for this expedition and in essence turned it around 180 degrees by proposing a sport-oriented goal. It didn't take us long change our expedition name and receive this challenge..."
On the 11th of August at Gdansk University they held a press conference to inform the media of their expedition and how much help they received organizing and planning from Jurek Majcherczyk and Classic Travel, which became their second most significant sponsor.
Taking part in this expedition, which will begin with a flight to Lima on the 18th of August, are: Szymon Belka (age 28) - organizer, Anna Kitowska (age 24), Roman Bednarek (age 28), Kacper Kadłubiski (age 25) and Marek Klimowicz (age 25). Their plans include biking over 2,000 kilometers (about 1,200 miles) with half of them being just around Lake Titicaca. Their biggest challenge besides road conditions will be the altitude. Classic Travel is assisting these brave students with a new bottle of oxygen, which they'll be carrying on their bikes as they pass the trails right by the edge of the lake. Jurek has also helped the group by providing them with contacts to locals, such as the Aymara people, who live on both sides of the lake. Manuel, their guide, was raised an Aymara and speaks the language. It is in this matter that our young friends will be safe in case of any unforeseen circumstances.
We wish them all the best and will update their status. The end of their trip is planned for the 12th of September in Lima.
